Landfill Final Cover System: Design & Installation

Closure is the long-term face of a landfill: the final cover must stop rainwater infiltration, control gas, and survive settlement and steep slopes for decades. This guide explains the standard cap profile, component selection, and the installation sequence that passes closure inspection.
1Why a Composite Cap
- A cap with a low-permeability barrier cuts infiltration to near zero — less leachate to treat, less risk of off-site contamination.
- GCL + geomembrane combined caps tolerate settlement better than thick clay caps and install in a fraction of the time.
- A drainage layer above the barrier removes rainwater so the barrier never sits under hydrostatic head.
2Typical Cap Profile (Top to Bottom)
| Layer | Function | Typical spec |
| Vegetative soil | Erosion control, habitat | 300–600 mm topsoil |
| Drainage layer | Remove infiltrated rainwater | Composite geonet (5–8 mm core) |
| Barrier | Stop infiltration, control gas | 1.0–1.5 mm HDPE or GCL (or both) |
| Gas collection layer | Convey landfill gas to wells | Gravel or geonet + perforated pipes |
| Foundation / waste | Support | Regraded and compacted |
3Barrier: GCL vs Geomembrane vs Both
- GCL (sodium bentonite, ≥ 4500 g/m², permeability ≤ 5.0×10⁻¹¹ m/s): self-healing, flexible, installs fast — excellent on slopes and where differential settlement is expected.
- HDPE geomembrane (1.0–1.5 mm): near-zero permeability, gas barrier — but needs a geotextile cushion above and below on rough subgrade.
- Combined GCL + geomembrane: the robust choice for sensitive sites; GCL seals around the geomembrane's field joints and damages.
- On steep slopes use textured geomembrane and confirm interface friction with the designer.
4Installation Sequence
- Regrade the waste to the design profile; place gas collection layer and connect to wells.
- Place the barrier: unroll GCL with overlaps 150–300 mm sealed with bentonite; weld the geomembrane with air-pressure-tested seams.
- Lay the drainage geonet upslope to downslope, overlaps shingled, edges sealed against soil intrusion.
- Place topsoil and vegetate; keep construction traffic off the barrier until covered.
5Slope & Anchor Details
- Anchor each layer at the crest in a trench (0.5–1.0 m deep depending on slope); intermediate anchors on long slopes.
- Textured liner or GCL on slopes steeper than 1:3; confirm stability by interface friction analysis.
- At the toe, bench the anchor so the drainage layer can daylight without running under the barrier.
6Closure Inspection Checklist
- Seam test records (air-pressure + vacuum) for the geomembrane; GCL overlap and bentonite seal log.
- Geonet joint sealing log — a gap lets soil into the drainage plane and kills it.
- Topsoil depth and vegetation establishment check.
- Gas well connectivity test and leachate monitoring point records.
Cost-saving tip: on settlement-tolerant sites, a single GCL barrier with a drainage geonet above can replace the geomembrane entirely — roughly 20–30% cheaper per m² while meeting most closure permits.
